In early 2015, Vandervoort went on the journey of a lifetime to Kenya, to see the different projects that World Vision offers the community.
The actress, born and raised in Toronto, has been working since she was 13 years old, and considers herself lucky to be doing what she loves best.
About 10 years ago, she began sponsoring two children through World Vision. But she wanted to do more.
After becoming a Global Celebrity Ambassador with World Vision, travelling to see the work first hand was a chance she couldn't pass up. She had just turned 30 and had been through many things which had changed her life, and wanted to make more of a change to focus specifically on helping others.
Along with her older sister Sarah, they embarked on a trip that would forever change her heart.
“We had the basic details about our journey: statistics, an itinerary, pamphlets and an armful of vaccines. We knew we'd be seeing how World Vision helps the youngest, most vulnerable children. I remember thinking, there is no way to fully prepare for a trip like this,” Vandervoort recalls.
Now back home in Canada, Vandervoort says, “I am aware of my surroundings. I have a sense of appreciation as I turn on my water, open my fridge and make a meal. I want to share my experience not just to encourage everyone to take part however they can...There are good things happening in the world, people helping people. You can be a part of it, no matter how small or large that part is. It makes a difference.”
Laura’s trip inspired her so much that she wanted to take some of her creativity and give back in a meaningful way.
“World Vision puts in the love and work long term with the community. When I decided to do an 11:11 limited edition charity jewelry line, I knew right away I wanted to team up with jewelry designer Melissa Lovy and have a portion of all proceeds go towards World Vision Canada and their ‘
Daughters Of India’ Program.'
World Vision is so grateful for ambassadors like Laura – who use their talents to help those who need it most.
